Embarked Sydney, 1 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 9 July 1916.

Found guilty, 21 August 1916, of being absent without leave from 6.30 am, 16 August, to midnight, 21 August 1916: awarded 7 days’ Field Punishment No 2 and forfeiture of 6 days’ pay; total forfeiture 13 days’ pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 21 November 1916.

Admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 23 February 1917 (bronchitis), and transferred same day to Divisional Rest Station (broncho-pneumonia); to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 24 February 1917 (pleurisy); to Ambulance Train No 10 and admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Boulogne, 26 March 1917 (appendicitis, slight). Transferred to England, 8 May 1917, and admitted to Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, 9 May 1917. Transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 1 June 1917; discharged on furlough, 8 June 1917, to report to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 23 June 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 10 September 1917; rejoined 35th Bn in the field, 22 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 13 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, right arm), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 17th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train, 14 October 1917, and admitted to 7th Canadian General Hospital; to England, 19 October 1917, and admitted to Quex Park Military Hospital, Shorncliffe (amputated right arm: condition severe). Transferred to 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 18 December 1917. Discharged on furlough, 20 December 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 3 January 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT ‘Euripides’, 21 March 1918; disembarked Melbourne, for overland travel by rail to Sydney; discharged, Sydney (amputated right arm above elbow), 20 September 1918.
