Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He attacked an enemy dug out single handed, capturing a machine gun and eight prisoners. On reaching the objective he took a Lewis gun forward and established it in a most advantageous position under heavy fire. He made a careful reconnaissance of the ground in front, and showed great courage and coolness throughout.'
