'At NOREUIL on 2nd April, 1917, this Non Commissioned Officer showed great gallantry and devotion to duty while leading his Platoon in action. Although blown up and rendered unconscious for a few moments he picked himself up and led his platoon under heavy shell and rifle fire in an admirable manner. Later when the Company attacked, he led his platoon against portion of our trench then temporarily occupied by the enemy. Although wounded he still continued to lead his men. He forced the enemy back, who, at that time were again counter attacking.'
