Embarked from Melbourne, 22 December 1914. Embarked from Egypt to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli), 21 July 1915. Promoted Corporal, 1 May 1915. Wounded in action (shrapnel, right shoulder), 19 May 1915; evacuated to Mudros and admitted to No. 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, 15 September 1915; discharged to duty, 28 September 1915. Embarked for England (rheumatism), 25 November 1915; admitted to County of London War Hospital, Epsom, 4 December 1915.

Proceeded overseas to France, 25 July 1916. Promoted Lance Sergeant, 18 August 1916. Wounded in action, 1 December 1916; evacuated to England (gun shot wound, left foot), 6 December 1916. Discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 1 May 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Ayrshire', 23 May 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 17 July 1917; discharged, 16 November 1917.
