'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a runner. From the 24th till the 29th September 1917 he worked hard and continuously carrying messages from battalion headquarters to companies and Brigade runner posts, nearly all the time under heavy shell fire. When the N.C.O. in charge of the runners was wounded he took charge and throughout the operations maintained charge and throughout the operations maintained an efficient service of runners in spite of half the runners becoming casualties. His untiring energy and cheerfulness under the most adverse circumstances set a splendid example to the remaining runners.'
