'On 12th October 1917, East of YPRES, for conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in action. This man was acting as stretcher bearer and did splendid work under very heavy fire and under exceptionally trying conditions and weather. On one occasion, a shell exploded alongside the stretcher he was carrying wounding two of his bearers. he himself was badly shaken by the explosion. he continued with his task and throughout the day displayed the same devotion and courage.'
