War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 11 May 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917. Admitted to Military Hospital, Devonport, 20 July 1917 (parotitis); discharged, 8 August 1917, and marched into No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, the same day (Class 'A'). Marched into 6th Training Bn, Rolleston, 12 August 1917. Found guilty, 29 September 1917, of being absent without leave from midnight, 23 September 1917, until midnight, 27 September 1917: awarded 12 days' confined to camp, forfeits 12 days' pay, and total forfeiture of 16 days' pay. Transferred to Machine Gun Corps, 31 October 1917; taken on strength of Machine Gun Corps Details, Grantham, 2 November 1917. Marched into 6th Training Bn, Fovant, 16 November 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 27 December 1917; marched into 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Le Havre, 28 December 1917.
