Captain Halkyard returned to his unit under the influence of drink [underlined] and the matter was reported to Brigade Major who instructed that he be returned to his Battalion. This was done. In consequence of this Captain Halkyard was returned to Australia and the G.O.C., A.I.F., has caused the following remarks to be made for communication to the Defence Department: "The G.O.C., A.I.F., has approved of his return to Australia for termination of appointment and instructions have been issued for him to be sent to England if and when fit to travel. Please inform Defence that it is with much regret that the G.O.C., A.I.F., has been compelled to adopt such an extreme measure in the case of a Duntroon graduate, but he considers that such repeated acts of misconduct cannot be overlooked, and has no option but to recommend that he be no longer retained as an Officer of the Permanent Forces." A.M.F. appointment terminated on 29 May 1918.'
