War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli Campaign), 5 April 1915. Wounded in action (gun shot wound, foot; date not recorded); admitted to 17th General hospital, Alexandria, 13 May 1915; transferred to Convalescent Camp, Mustapha, 1 August 1915. Found guilty, 13 August 1915, of (1) breaking out of hospital whilst a patient and returning at 10 pm dressed in khaki on 26 June: awarded 7 days' confined to barracks; (2) absent without leave from 9.30 pm till midnight on 7 July 1915: awarded 4 days' confined to barracks, and forfeited 1 day's pay. Admitted to No 1 Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 13 August 1915; discharged, 27 August 1915. Wife wrote to Minister of Defence, 2 June 1915: 'I wish to ask am I not entitled to receive a wife's portion of Private E. Glass's pay who has been reported as wounded (by wire today). He left myself and two children nine years ago, one a boy is now sixteen who is very anxious to enlist as a bugler if his age is not against him; the girl is thirteen and I am having a struggle to educate her and pay my way, so will you kindly let me know any particulars as I am very anxious.' Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Euripides', 29 August 1915; discharged (medically unfit: gun shot wound, left foot), Sydney, 14 January 1916. Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Death attributed to War Service. |
