War service: Western Front Tried by Field General Court Martial, 9 November 1918, on charge of desertion, in that he, in the field, absented himself without leave from 2100 on 28 September 1918 until arrested by Military Police at 1625 on 7 October 1918; found guilt, sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude. Admitted to 11th Military Prison, France, 19 December 1918; transferred to Portland Convict Prison, 6 April 1919; sentence suspended by GOC-in-C, Southern Command, 25 April 1919. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Mahia', 4 June 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 17 July 1919; discharged (termination of period of enlistment), Melbourne, 16 August 1919.
