Military Medal

'During the period 3/10/17 to 10/10/17 at BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES, L/Cpl. BROWN showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Though very severely shelled in his particular position in the S.O..S. Machine Gun barrage groups every day, he refused to abandon his gun. At one time a piece of H.E. Shell casing ripped his barrel casing rather badly while firing in response to an S.O.S. Signal, but he remedied it and carried on. Under the heaviest fire this man maintained his cheerful disposition and helped greatly in keeping up the spirits of his men.'
