Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on 20th September 1917 near WESTHOEK. This N.C.O. was with his platoon which was sent forward to garrison a strong point. The position was continuously shelled by the enemy and the Officer In Charge was killed. Sergeant BROWN immediately assumed command of the platoon and although heavy fire continually decreased its numbers and the position was repeatedly blown up, he still remained, attempting to consolidate. His marked courage and coolness under such adverse conditions was a magnificent example to his men.'
