'In operations near BROODSEINDE on 12th October, 1917, this man as a Company runner continually carried messages to Battalion Headquarters over ground which was heavily shelled. Throughout a very trying day he had no rest, and although severely shaken by a shell on one occasion he continued to carry out his duties in a most cheerful and gallant manner, and his responsibility that communication with Company and Battalion Headquarters never failed.'
