'For continuous good services throughout over three years service in EGYPT, GALLIPOLI, FRANCE and BELGIUM, and especially during operations on the SOMME between March and September 1918. C.S.M. BROWNLEE has proved himself a gallant and thoroughly reliable soldier under all conditions. His duties have frequently brought him under shell fire and tasks allotted to him have invariably been carried out efficiently and expeditiously. He has on numerous occasions carried out works normally performed by officers and his organisation of transport and R.E. stores services has been most efficient and thoroughly reliable. His personal conduct, his sound judgment, initiative and readiness to accept responsibility have been of the greatest value in assisting smooth working of many of the operations undertaken by this unit.'
