'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his company was subjected to very heavy shell fire and their trench was blown to pieces, he worked continuously for ten hours digging out men who had been buried and attending to the wounded under the heaviest fire. Later, in an attack, he showed the greatest courage and determination in leading his platoon to the objective.'
