'During the operations east of YPRES 20/23rd September, 1917, for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while carrying rations and ammunition up to the forward group in front of HOOGE. On several occasions he showed great initiative in overcoming difficulties and set a fine example to the remainder of the pack column. By his good judgement he saved casualties in his detachment.'
