'During the operations of this Battalion near BELLICOURT between the 29th September/1st October 1918 Tem/Cpl. BURNS displayed much Gallantry, courage and initiative. When his Officer and the Platoon Sergeant became casualties Corporal BURNS assumed command of the Platoon and by his example, coolness and immediate grasp of the situation quickly obtained the full confidence of the men. His work was an inspiration to them. He was a member of a fighting patrol entering JONCOURT when single handed he captured five prisoners. He is entitled to the highest praise for his very fine work throughout the operations.'
