'At PERONNE during operations on 1st/2nd September 1918, for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the advance he engaged and silenced several Machine guns with his Lewis gun displaying great resource and daring. In the operation of clearing the town he did similar good work, and by his initiative was the means of securing many prisoners.'
