War service: Egypt, England Embarked Adelaide, 9 March 1916; disembarked Suez, 3 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria, 5 June 1916; disembarked England (date not recorded). Taken on strength, 8th Training Bn, 27 August 1916. Trnsferred to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 21 September 1916. Tried by District Court Martial, Larkhill, 20 July 1917, of charge deserting His Majesty's Service in that he at No. 6 Camp, Perhams Downs, 7 November 1916, was absent without leave from 10th Bn from 7 November 1916 unil apprehended by the Civil power at Canning Town, 9 May 1917, when he was dressed in plain clothes; found Not Guilty of desertion, but Guilty of being absent without leave: awarded 6 months' detention, and forfeited a total of 439 days' pay. Unexpired portion of the sentence - 83 days - to be remitted as from 28 October 1917. On Command, Cookery School, Tidworth, 24 February 1918. Marched in to No 1 Training Bn, Sutton Veny, 25 April 1918. Admitted to Military Hospital, Sutton Veny, 25 June 1918 (influenza); discharged to Training Depot, 29 June 1918. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Medic', 24 August 1918 (cardiac weakness); disembarked Melbourne, 11 October 1918, for onward travel by train to Adelaide; discharged (medically unfit), Adelaide, 6 December 1918.
