Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed exceptional coolness, and set a very fine example to the men working under him when repairing two breaks in a light railway at points which were being shelled by the enemy with peculiar intensity. Although forced three times to withdraw, he returned on each occasion with as few men as he could possibly employ to repair the line, and completed the repairs under the most trying conditions.'
