'He was in charge of a Lewis Gun section during the attack on the German lines South of BULLECOURT, on the 11th April, 1917. He guided his section to the second objective and quickly selecting a position opened fire on the retreating enemy causing them heavy losses. When forced to retire he took up successive positions firing on the advancing enemy, greatly delaying them. When forced through concentrated machine gun fire and bombs to abandon his gun and retire, he first removed an important part of the gun rendering it useless. By his coolness and bravery he rendered most valuable service.'
