'POZIERES 7th to 13th August, 1916. For exceptional bravery in carrying messages from Advanced Brigade Headquarters to Battalions. The following is copy of recommendation in the man's favour by 2nd Lieutenant W. BEAGLEY, 4th Brigade Signalling Officer and Lieutenant MORGAN, 15th Battalion, Signalling Officer. 'I beg to recommend the following man of "C" Company, 13th Battalion for his bravery and devotion to duty during the operations carried out by the 4th Brigade from 6th to 13th August, 1916 - Private J. BUTLER - This man was attached as a runner to the Brigade Signalling Section and was stationed at Advanced Brigade Headquarters. His work from here was such that he not only performed his own task in a manner worthy of the highest praise but by his devotion and bravery he set an example to the others which no doubt whatever brought about the general excellence of the work done by the men stationed at the abovementioned place. On 3 special occasions while shell fire was so heavy as to prevent Battalion runners going out, this man delivered despatches to Battalions, on one occasion he travelled barefooted. He also assisted linesmen in repairing telephone wires when one of their number had to be evacuated.' Lieutenant SHIRTLEY, Signal Officer, 15th Battalion, also strongly recommends same man for the work.'
