Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 27 March 1916.

Taken on strength, 24th Bn, in the field, 31 July 1916.

Admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance, 16 August 1916 (abdominal pains), and transferred to 5th Field Ambulance; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, 24 August 1916; to 28th General Hospital, Etaples, 16 September 1916 (disordered action of the heart); transferred to England, 22 September 1916, and admitted to Wharnecliffe War Hospital, Sheffield; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 6 December 1916; discharged on furlough, 17 January 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 1 February 1917.

Admitted to Parkhouse Military Hospital, 2 February 1917; discharged from hospital, 21 April 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 79 days.

Found guilty, 16 October 1917, of (1) neglecting to obey AIF Routine Order in that he was found in Ludgershall at 10 pm, 26 September 1917; (2) neglecting to obey AIF Routine Order in that he on 26.9.17 at Ludgershall was not in possession of identification disc or pay book; (3) neglecting to obey Routine Order in that he did trespass on private property near Ludgershall, 26 September 1917; (4) being absent without leave from 28 September till 1 October 1917: awarded forfeiture of 6 days' pay; total forfeiture: 9 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 23 October 1917; rejoined 24th Bn, in the field, 29 October 1917.

Admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, 16 August 1918 (pyrexia, unknown origin); transferred to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 18 August 1918 (pneumonia); to England, 27 August 1918, and admitted to Boscombe Hospital, 28 August 1918 (pneumonia: severe); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 12 September 1918; discharged to Littlemoor Camp, Weymouth.

Sick to hospital, 7 October 1918; marched in to No 2 Command Depot from hospital, 25 October 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suevic', 20 November 1918 (pneumonia, debility); disembarked Melbourne, 5 January 1919; discharged (medically unfit: disordered action of the heart), Melbourne, 11 February 1919.
