Embarked Melbourne, 20 October 1914. Admitted to Hospital, Alexandria, 31 July 1915 (enteritis); discharged to New Zealand and Australian Convalescent Hospital, Helouan, 11 August 1915; discharged to Abbassia Detention Barracks, 12 August 1915. Admitted to Detention Barracks Infectious Hospital, Abbassia, 14 August 1915 (venereal disease). Commenced return to Australia for discharge on board HT 'Wiltshire' from Suez, 31 August 1915; disembarked Melbourne, 25 September 1915.

Returned to duty, 14 January 1916. Re-embarked, 7 September 1916; re-embarked, 7 September 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 October 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 18 December 1916; taken on strength, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, 3 January 1917, and posted to 5th Battery. On leave to England, 19 September 1917; rejoined unit, 27 September 1917.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 6 November 1917 (gas), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 4th General Hospital, 7 November 1917; to 6th Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 22 November 1917; to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 5 January 1918; to Australian General Base Depot, Havre, 5 February 1918; rejoined unit, 7 March 1918.

Wounded in action, 21 March 1918 (gas, second occasion), and admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 22 March 1918; to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 24 March 1918; to England, 26 March 1918, and admitted same day to Middlesex Hospital, Napsbury; to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 3 April 1918. Discharged, 29 April 1918, on furlough, to report to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 13 May 1918. Found guilty, 29 April 1918, of being absent without leave from 7.30 am, 1 October 1917, to 22 October 1917: awarded forfeiture of 28 days' pay; total forfeiture of 50 days' pay. Mached in to Overseas Training Brigade, 28 May 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 1 August 1918; rejoined unit, 14 August 1918.
