'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. On 4.10.17 during the attack on BROODSEINDE RIDGE he acted as a runner and carried despatches from his Company Commander for a considerable length of time. Although the shelling was intense, he showed no hesitation but willingly worked at this important duty until completely exhausted. His courage and devotion to duty were quite exceptional.'
