Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal, 5 June 1915.

Wounded in action, 8 August 1915 (shrapnel wound, shoulder, ear, both legs); transferred to HS 'Dunluce Castle' and thence to Malta; admitted to Valetta Military Hospital, 12 August 1915. Listed as dangerously ill, 1 September 1915; taken off dangerously ill list, 7 September 1915.

Taken on board HS 'Brasile', 2 October 1915; invalided to England, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, 10 October 1915 (amputated right leg).

Disembarked Alexandria, 18 April 1916; admitted to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 19 April 1916.

Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Port Sydney', 24 June 1916; disembarked Sydney, 22 July 1916; discharged, Sydney, 22 October 1916.
