War service: Western Front Embarked Fremantle, 9 August 1916. Found guilty at sea, 22 August 1916, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he gambled with cards after 'Lights Out' knowing it was contrary to orders: awarded 40 hours' detention. Found guilty at sea, 2 September 1916, of breaking ship at 5 pm until arrested by Picquet at 9 pm, 31 August 1916: awarded 96 hours' detention. Disembarked Plymouth, England, 25 September 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 16 January 1917; taken on strength, 16th Bn, 21 January 1917. Admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance, 3 February 1917 (TB lungs), and transferred same day to 1/1 South Midland Division Casualty Clearing Station; to 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 4 February 1917; to England, 14 February 1917 (pulmonary tuberculosis), and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 15 February 1917; to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 12 March 1917; discharged for return to Australia, 4 May 1917. Commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board HT 'Miltiades', 4 May 1917; disembarked Fremantle, 24 June 1917; discharged Perth (medically unfit), 13 December 1917.
