'At 4.45 a.m. on the morning of the 8th August, 1918, on the road running into the long valley about 3,000 yards south west of CERISY, No. 1513 Lance Corporal C.E. CANE as a member of a party which closely followed the Infantry advance. This section was given a task of clearing a portion of the road which was entirely blocked in places, but which had to be cleared to enable guns to move forward in time to be used for the capture of the second objective. It was absolutely essential that this work be done at high pressure, and it was chiefly through the coolness, energy, and cheerful encouragement of Lance Corporal CANE, under most trying circumstances, that this section of the road was completed to time. Throughout the whole operation, this N.C.O. showed a spirit which was invaluable, in keeping up the morale of the men, and urging them onto greater efforts. Lance Corporal CANE showed a remarkable degree of leadership, which is exceedingly necessary in keeping men working at high pressure when under hostile artillery and machine gun fire, and is in every way deserving of the highest praise.'
