Military Medal 'On 4th July, 1918, in the operation against VAIRE WOOD, east of CORBIE, Sergeant CANNING's work as Platoon Sergeant was conspicuously good. His Platoon had a very difficult part to play, involving two different formations, but mainly owing to Sergeant CANNING's tireless energy, his sterling example and controlling ability, they reached the final objective without the slightest disorganisation. During consolidation this N.C.O. walked fearlessly up and down his front, made sure that his men were in their correct positions and encouraged and assisted his men in every possible way.'
