War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 1 August 1917, with rank of Corporal (Voyage Only); transhipped to SS 'Orita', Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, 21 September 1917; disembarked Liverpool, England, 3 October 1917; reverted to the ranks, and same day marched into 4th Training Bn, Codford. Appointed Acting Corporal, 10 October 1917; reverted to the ranks, 1 November 1917. Marched in to 13th Training Bn, Codford, 3 November 1917. Appointed Acting Corporal, 16 January 1918. On Command, Drill School, Jellalabad Barracks, Codford, 4 February 1918; rejoined 13th Training Bn from Drill School, 28 March 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 7 April 1918; taken on strength, 16th Bn, in the field, 16 April 1918. Killed in action, 8 August 1918. Statement (undated) by Adjutant, 16th Bn: 'The only information points to Canny having been hit by an a shell splinter in the vicinity of a fallen aeroplane situation behind the FMD line. Regarding burial, we are unable to obtain exact location, as all our Records were destroyed by shell-fire on the 16th August, when the Orderly room was blown up.'
