War service: Egypt, Western Front

Taken on strength of 1st Division Depot, Tel el Kabir, Egypt, 5 July 1916; proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, Alexandria, 29 July 1916.

Found guilty, 4 October 1916, of being absent without leave from 7:00 am, 2 October to 11:00 am, 4 October 1916: awarded 42 hours detention and forfeited 3 days' pay.

Marched in to Parkhouse, England, 14 October 1916.

District Court Marshal held at Perham Downs, 19 December 1916: Charged with (1) being absent without leave from Reveille from 28 October, until arrested by Military Police in Dublin at 6:30 pm, 12 November 1916; (2) an act to the prejudice of good order and Military discipline in that he, in Dublin on 12 November 1916, was in possession of a document purporting to be a genuine pass, well knowing that is was not genuine; (3) conduct to the prejudice of good order and Military discipline in that he, in Dublin between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm, 12 November 1916, was begging in the streets. Found guilty and sentenced to undergo detention for 18 months. Sentence later changed to 12 months' detention; the unexpired portion of sentence (205 days) was remitted as from 27 May 1916: forfeited 212 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 27 May 1917; marched in to Australian General Base Depot, Rouelles, France, 28 May 1917; transferred to Machine Gun Bn, 3 June 1917; marched in to Camiers, 5 June 1917; marched out to join unit, 21 June 1917; taken on strength of 2nd Machine Gun Company, 24 June 1917.

Admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance, 18 July 1917 (injury to ankle); transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 21 July 1917; to 1st General Hospital, Etaples, 23 July 1917; discharged to duty, 14 August 1917.

Proceeded to England, 26 September 1917 (medical reasons).

Found guilty, Weymouth, 5 October 1917, of (1) neglecting to obey Garrison orders, in that he was found absent without a pass from his Commanding Officer at 10:00 pm, 2 October 1917, (2) attempting to escape while in custody and (3) giving a false name to arresting Officers: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'A 35', 31 October 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 30 December 1917; discharged, 15 March 1918 (medically unfit: tobacco ambyolpia).
