Proceeded to join Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 4 September 1915. Fined 7/6- for drunkenness at Lemnos, 3 January 1916. Admitted to South Camp, Mudros, 10 January 1916 (alcohol poisoning); transferred to hospital, Alexandria, 10 January 1916; fined 5/- for being drunk in town, 10 January 1916. Fined 5/- for drunkenness, Tel el Kebir, 15 January 1916

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 14 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 19 March 1916. Fined 10/- for being drunk, Morbecque, 25 March 1916. Found guilty of being drunk on the night of 13th April, having been previously warned for duty as Bearer at Receiving Room: awarded 168 hours' confined to barracks.

Wounded in action, 29 July 1916 (shell shock); admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, 29 July 1916; transferred to 23rd General Hospital, Etaples, 30 July 1916; to England, 5 August 1916 (shell shock and gun shot wound, forehead); admitted to hospital 6 August 1916; to Command Depot, Weymouth, 22 September 1916; to Cherrington Military Hospital, 18 October 1916. Admitted to Wareham Military Hospital, 13 March 1917; discharged, 18 March 1917 (injured shoulder).

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Miltiades', 4 May 1917; discharged, 31 July 1917.
