Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 23 June 1916. Transferred to Rest Camp, 11 June 1917; rejoined unit, 24 June 1917. Granted furlough, 11 July 1917; rejoined unit, 31 July 1917.

Wounded in action, 4 October 1917; admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Boulogne, 5 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, right hand). Transferred to England, 10 October 1917; admitted to Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe, Norwich, 10 October1917 (right hand amputated). Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 30 January 1918. Discharged from hospital and granted furlough, 5 February 1918, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 19 February 1918.
