'For bravery and devotion to duty. on the 8th August, 1918, during the operations on the SOMME, east of HAMEL, this N.C.O. did valuable work in keeping direction on the right flank of his Company, in spite of heavy fog and smoke, he was successful in getting his Section to its objective. Later in the operation, by the brave and skilful handling of his Section he was successful in capturing and enemy field gun. Throughout the operation he displayed untiring energy and devotion to duty.'
