'Showed great gallantry while in action near ZONEBEKE on 26th September, 1917. He obtained some very useful information while on patrol work and under very heavy fire delivered several very important messages, when other communications had failed. His coolness and courage throughout the action greatly inspired all the men around him. He is a particularly gallant soldier and one to whom his comrades look in in an emergency.'
