War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 10 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 18 June 1916. Taken on strength, 27th Bn, 6 July 1916. Wounded in action, Belgium, 10 October 1916 (gun shot wound, right leg); admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 11 October 1916; transferred to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, 11 October 1916; to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 22 October 1916; to England, 26 October 1916, and admitted to Keighley War Hospital (amputated foot); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 21 November 1916; to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 8 March 1917. Found guilty, 3 May 1917, of being absent without leave from 9 pm, 2 May, toll 11.30 pm, 2 May 1917: awarded 7 days' confined to barracks. Discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 3 July 1917. Commenced return to Australia on board HS 'Karoola', 3 July 1917 (amputated right leg); discharged (medically unfit), Adelaide, 26 September 1917.
