'On and about 12th October, 1917, East of YPRES, this man acted as Stretcher Bearer during the operations. He carried on his work cheerfully and uncomplainingly under heavy fire and under the most distressing weather conditions. The other members of his squad were killed or wounded but he kept on working heedless of discomfort or fatigue. he set a fine example of courage and endurance to his comrades.'
