Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the tour of duty of his Company in the line at METEREN 19th April 1918, to 1st May, 1918, Sergeant CARTER did splendid work. While a night relief of sections was being conducted the enemy heavily shelled the Company area, and both Officers of his Section were killed. He immediately took charge of the section and notwithstanding the shell fire, by skilful leadership he successfully completed the relief without further casualties. He set a splendid example to his men.'
