Taken on strength, 16th Bn, Gallipoli, 28 July 1915, and reverted to rank of Pte. Admitted to 4th Field Ambulance, Mudros, 24 October 1915 (jaundice); transferred to No 3 Australian General Hospital, 24 October 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 30 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Promoted Corporal, 22 March 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 9 June 1916. Promoted Company Quartermaster Sergeant, 1 August 1916.

Admitted to 12th Field Ambulance, 19 August 1916 (boil, right buttock), and transferred to 4th Casualty Clearing Station; by Ambulance Train to 18th General Hospital, Camiers, 20 August 1918; discharged to 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 30 August 1916; rejoined unit, 11 September 1918.

Admitted to 4th Division Rest Station, 4 February 1917 (contused foot); discharged to duty, 11 February 1917. Reverted to rank of Sergeant at own request, 12 February 1917. Detached to 2nd Anzac Corps Headquarters, 26 May 1917; rejoined 16th Bn, 4 March 1918.

Admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance, 10 May 1918 (carbuncle, neck); transferred by Ambulance Train, 14 May 1918, and admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 15 May 1918; transferred to England, 19 May 1918, and admitted to 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth, 20 May 1918; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 24 June 1918; discharged to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 28 June 1918. Marched out to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 5 August 1918; to Overseas Training Brigade, 22 August 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 6 September 1918; rejoined Bn, 14 September 1918.

Admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance, 2 November 1918 (influenza), and transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville, 4 November 1918 (broncho-pneumonia: dangerously ill). Died of broncho-pneumonia, 5 November 1918 (death due to exposure).
