'For conspicuous gallantry in keeping his gun in action under very heavy shell fire in the captured trenches near BULLECOURT on 3rd May 1917 and thereby helping to beat off a serious counter attack. Later in the day he voluntarily quitted what cover the trench afforded to bring in wounded in daylight.'
