Found guilty of neglecting to obey a Camp Order and being absent without leave, 10 pm, 27 July to 10 am, 29 July 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 17 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 25 November 1916. Wounded in action (gun shot wound, right arm), 14 April 1917; rejoined unit, 8 May 1917. Wounded in action, second occasion (gun shot wound, chest and abdomen), 27 May 1917; evacuated to England, 31 May 1917. Discharged from 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 3 October 1917, after 9 days' treatment for venereal disease.
