'For courageous service and devotion to duty on the night of 3rd/4th March, 1918 during raid on enemy trenches in vicinity of WARNETON. He was a member of the right assault wire crossing party, with another man cleared the entry to trench and held it against enemy bombers till the strong party came through. He also entered and bombed a dugout personally killing four of the enemy. He showed great coolness and bravery throughout the whole operation.'
