Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night of Aug. 31st/1st Sept. during the attack North of Clery, this soldier carried messages from the front line to Company Headquarters, having to pass through a valley which was being heavily shelled with H.E. and Gas. He then volunteered to return to the line with rations and water for his section, again passing through the same valley, still under heavy shell fire. It was a very dark night and he had to move over very difficult country. Though suffering from the effects of gas he completed his task and remained on duty, setting a splendid example to all.'
