'On the night of the 13/14th September near WESTHOEK this N.C.O. [4892 H. ELLIS] with Sapper CASSIDY, superintended the burying of cable at I.12.c., near 'Y' WOOD. On two occasions the party was heavily shelled, both with HE and mustard gas. Sergeant ELLIS and Sapper CASSIDY remained fully exposed through-out the jointing of the cable and the repairing of the breaks. By the personal courage and absolute disregard of danger displayed, he set a fine example to the digging party.'
