'During the operation on MONTBREHAIN, east of PERONNE, on 5th October, 1918, this man acted as a stretcher bearer, and his dauntless courage and untiring zeal called forth universal admiration. He went forward with the first wave and worked incessantly until all the wounded were attended to. Throughout he was subjected to heavy machine gun and shell fire, but he carried on undeterred. When the casualties were too many for him and his fellow bearers to manage, he organised a party of prisoners, and then completed the task of clearing the wounded. His devotion to duty was responsible for the lives of many who were wounded.'
