War service: Western Front Embarked Fremantle, 23 December 1916; disembarked Devonport, 17 February 1917. Found guilty, 21 March 1917, of being absent without leave, 19 March 1917: awarded 2 days confined to camp; forfeited 1 days pay. Transferred to 28th Bn, 12 June 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 22 May 1917; taken on strength, 28th Bn, and added 'A' to number, 13 June 1917. Wounded in action, Belgium, 20 September 1917, and admitted to 6th Field Ambulance (gun shot wound, arm); transferred to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred by Ambulance Train to 47th General Hospital, Le Treport, 21 September 1917; to No. 3 Convalescent Depot, 4 October 1917; to 2nd Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 14 October 1917; rejoined unit, 23 October 1917. Proceeded on English leave, 26 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 15 March 1918. Found guilty, 23 April 1918, of being absent without leave, 7 am, 9 April-noon, 14 April 1918 (6 days): awarded 29 days Field Punishment No. 2; forfeited total of 34 days pay. Court of Inquiry declared him an illegal absentee as from 22 May 1918; still absent, 21 June 1918. Field General Court Martial, 30 October 1918, heard charge of when on Active Service desertion from 20 May to 18 August 1918: pleaded not guilty.
