'Was Company Signaller during the advance on 18th September, 1918, near LE VERGUIER. Just as our barrage opened, and while we were still on our jumping off tapes, Private Chambers was wounded by the same shell that killed his Company Commander and wounded several others. he said nothing about his wound, but went forward with the first wave and carried the whole of his signalling gear to the first objective. it was not until he collapsed on the Brown Line that anyone knew that he had been hit. As soon as it was noticed that the was wounded it was found that his jacket and shirt were saturated with blood and that he had a large wound in the back. He did not even then want to be evacuated, but begged for permission to go on with the rest, b ut owing the weak state he was in, from loss of blood, this of course was impossible and he was sent back on a stretcher. Considering that he had been badly wounded so early and yet carried the whole of his signalling gear through with him, his whole action was a splendid example of devotion to duty.'
