'Private CHAPMAN has carried out the duties of Runner to his Machine Gun Section since 28th January 1917 and on all occasions has been speedy and reliable. This was particularly the case during Advance Guard Action NOREUIL Sector, 26th March to 7th April, 1917. On morning of 2nd April during the attack on NOREUIL he volunteered and took an important situation despatch through very heavy Machine Gun and rifle fire, and later returned with orders to his Officer again through heavy fire. This speedy despatch running had the effect of early reinforcing an exposed flank of 50th Battalion with 3 Machine Guns.'
