'At PERONNE during Operations on 1st/2nd September 1918, for great gallantry and initiative. His officer having become a casualty he led his platoon with dash and skill over extremely difficult marshy ground, putting the enemy to flight and capturing many prisoners. On reaching the final objective his platoon was heavily shelled. Here his personal courage and contempt for danger greatly inspired his men, who succeeded in consolidating and holding the position.'
