War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Wounded in action, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915; admitted to Egyptian Government Hospital, Alexandria, 13 May 1915 (shrapnel wound, buttock; and mental deficiency: loss of memory); transferred to Citadel Hospital, Cairo, 23 May 1915. Medical report, Citadel Hospital, 24 May 1915: 'He is in an acute maniacal state and partially delirious and has to be restrained from injuring himself and others ... The sargeant [sic] (RAMC) who accompanied him to the Citadel, Cairo, states that while in Alexandria he attempted to strangle a native ... He is ... prone to homicide and may attempt suicide.' Transferred to Government Hospital for the Insane, Abbassia, 25 May 1915. Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Kyarra', 9 June 1915 (shell shock; wound, hand); disembarked Melbourne, 10 June 1915; discharged (medically unfit), Brisbane, 29 September 1915.
