War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Wounded in action, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915; admitted to Egyptian Government Hospital, Alexandria, 13 May 1915 (shrapnel wound, buttock; and mental deficiency: loss of memory); transferred to Citadel Hospital, Cairo, 23 May 1915. Medical report, Citadel Hospital, 24 May 1915: 'He is in an acute maniacal state and partially delirious and has to be restrained from injuring himself and others ... The sargeant [sic] (RAMC) who accompanied him to the Citadel, Cairo, states that while in Alexandria he attempted to strangle a native ... He is ... prone to homicide and may attempt suicide.' Transferred to Government Hospital for the Insane, Abbassia, 25 May 1915.
